Flow Rate. The Hario has a fast and even flow rate. The Clever dripper slows, taking 30+ seconds longer to draw down (2 mins 20 sec compared to 1 min 40 sec). As this draw down time is part of the overall steep, in the end the two end up tasting much the same.
One key difference between the Clever Dripper and the Hario Switch is the type of filters they use. The Clever Dripper uses trapezoid filters, which are standard coffee filters found in any supermarket. This can be convenient if you're already using that type of filter for other brewers. On the other hand, the Hario Switch uses 02 size V60
Differences: V60 vs Clever Dripper. Ceramic build vs BPA-free plastic build; Opening at the bottom vs Shut-off valve at the bottom; requires a stand/ decanter/ mug vs can be used on any surface before brewing is done; Water poured in continuously, small amounts at a time vs water poured in all at once
The best dripper. The Kalita Wave's flat bottom ensures the most even extraction—and the best-tasting coffee—of all the pour-over drippers we've tested. $27 from Amazon. The Kalita Wave
Since this is one of the top Google results on this topic, wanted to share my experience. Using 18g of coffee, you can get exactly 300mL of water into a Hario Switch and give it a stir with a spoon (for a 60g/L ratio). When I start the drawdown and I lose a bit of water, I then give mine a swirl to even out the coffee bed.
The 03 Switch is my everyday brewer, and I take the Clever on trips because it's less fragile and filters are easier to find if needed. The nice thing about the 03 size is that I can brew a 450g cup that perfectly fills my 16oz hydro flask. And during the warmer months I'll brew 400g over 200g of ice to make a total of 600g of iced coffee.
Add 22g coffee ground with a Knock Aergrind at 3:1. Pour in ~100g water at 190°F and start timer. Stir five times at 15 seconds. Pour more water to get the total water weight to 365g at 30 seconds. Stir five times at 1 minute. Drain at 2 minutes, should finish around 3.5-4 minutes. [deleted] • 6 yr. ago.
Which Hario V60 material is best? When it comes to coffee pour-over drippers, though there's the Kalita, Melitta, Chemex and the Clever Dripper, the Hario V60 holds its own. With a staggering variety of colours, materials and sizes, it can be hard to choose. Image: Unsplash
Clever Dripper is way, way easier than a V60 or Chemex. It's essentially just following directions rather than having a specific technique developed. However, you can mimic a Clever Dripper with an AeroPress, and if you don't need the extra volume of coffee, you're good.
V60 is more of a craft, but it is also a more pleasant/relaxing experience when you are dialled in. In terms of flavour, I guess it depends. I would say a bit more clarity is possible with V60, and I prefer the lighter texture that you get with it. AeroPress is nice because of its ease, speed, quick cleanup and consistency.
A clever dripper is like a blend of a pour over and a slightly more finicky brewing method. The funnel drips into a chamber where it sits for a bit. V60 is the way to go, it is the most pour over pour over and can get you all those tasting notes.
Clever is great for making an 8/10 cup every time with very little effort and room for mistakes. V60 can make some 9s and 10s, but it will either take a lot more attention and skill, or it wil be hit or miss with some 7s and 8s also. With 2-3 times showing my SO how to brew Clever they can make the same 8/10 cup as me.
